Set on the confluence of the River Saône and the Rhône, Lyon, City of Lights, Capital of the Gauls, of Silks and of Cuisine, is an ancient city boasting a rich mixture of historical architecture from Roman amphitheatres to delicate cathedral spires, winding streets and spectacular views. I have always loved this beautiful little city. Steeped in varied history, it is in itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site and yet it is absolutely buzzing with creativity and innovative projects from the world of art to cuisine, naturally.

Our destination is the Residence Dock Ouest, set apart from the bustle of the city centre and yet with direct access to the historical quarter. The impressive curved, corner building, with its strips of wood that create a play of striped light inside and out, is hard to miss. In keeping with the reputation of the famous Chef who owns it, it breathes grounded simplicity, innovative flair and a dash of dazzle. What more could one expect from Paul Bocuse, vanguard pioneer of Nouvelle Cuisine and famed Ambassador of the French Culinary tradition? Nothing he has ever done could be considered classical or conformist and his passion for bringing quality food to everyman has been effortlessly translated into offering a quality hotel for grounded prices.

Upon entering, an authentic, bright, modern air pervades. Our room has an unpretentious, sober elegance about it and unfussy luxury. From the crisp sheets pulled tight across the soft double bed to the parquet floor and simple, tasteful furnishings, the ambiance is that of sedate quality and comfort. There is also a comprehensive kitchenette. The bathroom is sleek and chic and our wide windows let in a gentle, natural light along with a leafy view.

Though you can stop by almost any tiny bistro and sample a magnificent dish of creamy moules-frites, we are already spoilt for choice in the array of options provided by our host. Be it his gourmet fast-food café, Ouest Express, or one of his flagship restaurants, Brasserie L'Ouest, mouth-watering delights and surprises await us regardless of budget. What a tasty treat of a retreat in this exquisite city!
