Though technically a part of France, Corsica has its own character entirely. Set in the paradise waters of the Mediterranean Sea, it harbours its own set of customs, culture, traditions, and history. But it is the scenery that draws visitors in time and time again, with a backdrop of jutting rock formations, smooth valleys, small but lively coastal towns, and a whole host of hidden coves and intimate beaches. Its eclectic landscape means that you can mould the island to fit you, whether you are a hiking enthusiast, a foodie, or simply in search of some sun.
Knowing very little about the island, I packed my bags and hoped for the best. I booked into the Hotel Casa Bianca, set in the cosy town of Calvi. Surrounded by sandy beaches and bathed in an ever-present sun, it seemed like the perfect place to base myself and explore all the goods on offer. The Casa Bianca, which opened in May 2015, is both simple and elegant from the outside, with cream tones and a modern touch. Inside, it opens out in a harmonious design, with sleek white walls, tiled floors, and splashes of colour around every twist and turn. And, with only eleven rooms in total, including four suites, it provides an intimate affair for anyone wanting to get up close and personal with Corsica.
My room continued this intimacy, with a serene, luxurious backdrop bursting with subtle reds and oranges. It had all the amenities I could ask for from a newly-renovated hotspot, and the private balcony offered incredible views across the quaint skyline of Calvi and beyond.
Life in Corsica is easy and relaxed, just how you would imagine a sun-drenched island in the middle of the Med. Each day started with a bountiful breakfast, where I piled my plate high with local breads, homemade jams, and fresh meat and cheese. Eating out on the terrace listening to the tweet of the early morning birds and the rustle of the trees was the perfect way to melt into the day. Whilst I ate, I would decide how to spend the day, imagining the hours rolling out before me. Would it be a beach day or a day for exploring Calvi and the amazing scenery of Corsica?
At just 200m from the beach, the Casa Bianca is perfectly placed for any sun worshippers. In just a few minutes I could be down at the shoreline, unpacking my towel and my book, getting comfortable in the sand, and taking time out for a quick dip every now and again. But there was still plenty of opportunity to explore Calvi, with its glitzy marina, array of local shops, and a host of delicious restaurants, many of which served up fresh Mediterranean food with a sea view.
Corsica surprised me with every turn; there is no way I could have bargained for the island’s beauty and its welcoming charm. The Hotel Casa Bianca, with its plush, renovated rooms, was a serene spot to rest my head whilst getting to know Calvi.
