Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena ★★★★★

I have a weakness for good wine, particularly if it is a fine, fiery, fruity Spanish red. Once a hardcore Rioja fan I have gradually been won over by the often more subtle, softer flavours from the Ribera del Duero region. Much younger than its rival, Rioja, it has nevertheless grown rapidly in fame and respect globally since the 80s and now holds its place of pride amongst, not only the top wines in Spain, but the world. For some time now I have been longing to explore this beautiful region, following the Golden Mile, ducking into tiny wineries and tasting new and dazzling wines as well as visiting the homes of Protos wine in the little town of Peñafiel. Now VeryChic have made me an offer I cannot refuse in the form of a five star hotel set in a gorgeous 12th Century monastery situated right on the Golden Mile itself. How can a girl let an opportunity like that slip her by?

I have an inkling that the rich, purple grapes of this gold and green land in the North of Spain, will soon woo my husband to worship Bacchus, the god of wine, whose 66 metre Roman mosaic was unearthed nearby some years ago. A proud Spaniard to the core, he is simply happy for now to tag along and enjoy exploring the stunning region as well as visit Valladolid to sample its famous tapas. So here we are, winding our way through the dazzling heat to the majestic, ancient and perfectly preserved walls of the Hotel Castilla Termal Monasterio de Valbuena. Windows rolled right down to let the sweet scents of the fiery countryside in, we reach our destination already captivated by the area. The cool interiors make a very welcome refuge and the promise of a dip in that outdoor pool has us hurrying to unpack.

Our Deluxe bedroom soon has us slowing in our tracks, however, as we are met with an airy, large open space that resonates with peace and harmony. A plush, elegant room with rustic stone walls and stylishly chic furnishings equipped with modern facilities to provide perfect comfort, including fluffy bathrobes and slippers and all­essential air conditioning. We could quite easily cosy up right here for the rest of the day and yet a romantic stroll through the hotel gardens and a refreshing swim are very tempting. Particularly when we toy with the idea that we will first of all head to the fabulous spa to pamper ourselves with our 15% discount. The temptation is too great and soon we are immersed in a world of water, cascades, bubbling jacuzzis and a thermal pool to magic away our ailments. We emerge renewed but hungry and so we have our first explosive taste of colourful, exquisite cuisine and ruby nectar right here at the hotel's Restaurante Compás. By the time dessert comes we both know we have found a true gem and whether a wine­fanatic or not, this is a supremely special and privileged place.
