Hôtel Barrière Le Royal Deauville ★★★★★

Everybody loves a comeback, and the Hôtel Barrière Le Royal Deauville hotel in Deauville fits the bill in more ways than one. A new kid on the block back in 1913, the hotel was the toast of society, renowned for its en-suite bathrooms, central heating, electricity and telephones! Over a hundred years later, with in-room electricity no longer being the showstopper it once was. Nathalie Ryan of House of Dior stepped in to revamp the hotel and bring it firmly into the world of present-day luxury and comfort, while retaining the antique charm.

As we explore the genteel hallways and lounges, making our way up to our Superior Rooms, there is no jarring hybrid of the modern and the passé, but rather a building that continues to grow through the ages and evolve in total harmony with its venerable soul. Carpets, upholstery, and curtains are ornate and opulent. The entrance hall and salons are rich in leather and hardwoods, claret-coloured velvets, marble columns and crystal chandeliers. The furnishings lean towards wood and engraved details, while the soft lighting complements the hotel's cosy vibe.

From our bedroom - where the king-size bed takes pride of place - we enjoy the staggering views of the sea and I feel as though I were a Victorian society lady looking forward to a week of elegant soirées and taking the waters. Speaking of which, it's not long before we find ourselves out by the hotel's private pool. Under the gentle Normandy sun, the heated waters are a soothing delight, while the rich, plum-coloured loungers are almost too comfortable. Elsewhere in the fitness suite, I find a hammam and hot tub that hold my attention for much longer than the ample range of gym equipment.

Our stay at the Barrière Le Royal unfolds at a stately pace as we stroll along the famous boardwalk under the brightly coloured parasols and past the striped wooden cabins that are straight out of a 19th-century postcard. We throw ourselves into the art of living, so very French, with spa days, tennis, horse riding, golf and water sports. There's even the hotel's champagne bar and casino for when the kids have gone to bed.

Elegant, noble the Hôtel Barrière Le Royal Deauville has transitioned seamlessly from an ageing dame into a five-star palace of comforts. Here's to another 100 years and more!
