Arriving at the four-star Hôtel Barrière L'Hôtel du Golf Deauville, we’re immediately met with luxury and self-assured refinement; after all, the Barrière group is synonymous with top-of-the-range hospitality and charm. Yes, charm is the word that strikes me from the moment we draw up to the quintessential Norman façade, with its latticework of warm wood against a backdrop of pure green. And that’s before taking in the captivating view of the Normandy coast.

This is, don't forget, a dream hotel for golf aficionados (and those who marry them!). With no fewer than 8 courses in the spectacular surrounding countryside, including one on the estate itself that stretches almost to the front door, there’s more than enough to satisfy experts and beginners alike. Meanwhile, the luxurious and intimate Spa Diane Barrière offers dedicated well-being space, with treatments on offer in partnership with Biologique Recherche and Ligne St BARTH.

Our room feels cosy and homely, despite its ample size. We are cosseted in a cocoon of soft carpet, heavy curtains, the rich purple tones of the fabrics and throws and the soothing café-au-lait painted walls. For a rainy day, you'll find an LCD satellite TV, films on demand, Wi-Fi, and all of the luxury fittings you'd expect of a four-star hotel.

At the Green Bar, with a view of the 18th hole, the letter B is prominent; B for Barriere, B for Birdie, B for Bogey, B for the bonhomie of the boys in the bar sharing tales of days on the course. Then there’s the Le Lassay restaurant with its enchanting views of the Deauville countryside – and enchanting flavours on the plate! On the gourmet menu, the hotel's chef revisits regional favourites and traditional techniques for a delightful seasonal symphony.

Aside from the golfing greens, we enjoy a gentle walk to Trouville, just a mile away, where we can stroll along the pretty harbour and walk off our buffet breakfast as we watch the bobbing boats. Our morning walk slides seamlessly into a seafood lunch in Honfleur. Another day, we hire bikes from the hotel and cycle the coastal road, enjoying the briny sea air and the views of the blue channel.
