Hotel Melia Coral ★★★★★

Sophisticated luxury on the edge of the glistening Adriatic.

By Ellie Burnage, VeryChic correspondent
As much as I adore going away with my children, our family holidays sometimes turn out to not be as relaxing and carefree as I would hope. So when chance had it that they were both away on school trips at the same time this summer, we grabbed the opportunity to jet off on our own private getaway. We settled on the Hotel Melia Coral on the beautiful Istrian coast of Croatia, and we couldn’t have chosen better. The beautiful scenery of this adults-only establishment was only improved by its astounding facilities, exceptional dining options and classy ambience: it truly was perfect spot to spend some quality time just the two of us.

  • Admire the Savudrija lighthouse, the oldest on the Adriatic coast and in Croatia, built in 1818. And what’s more, there’s a romantic legend behind it; the Austrian Count Metternich constructed it for a beautiful Croatian lady who he fell in love with at a ball in Vienna. But unfortunately, fate intervened and they never got to live in it together. Istarska Ulica, Basanija, Savudrija, Croatia.
  • If you’re seeking somewhere to get away from it all, this is it. Cap Kamenjak is Istria’s southernmost point, and offers a wonderful landscape of rolling hills, vibrant Mediterranean flowers and long stretches of spotless beaches and coves. www.kamenjak.hr/en/Default.aspx
  • Explore the wealth of the region’s towns and villages, who all have a different character. Fall in love with the Venetian ambience and twisting streets of Rovinj, the bustle of Pula or the hilltop bohemian feel of the old town of the Groznjan.
