When it comes to Marrakech, I would consider myself somewhat of a seasoned traveller. I’d traversed the length and breadth of the famous Red City over the years, staying in uncountable traditional riads and devouring many a delicious Moroccan delicacy. But for my next voyage to this exotic corner of Africa, I thought it was time to experience the city through new eyes. The four-star 2Ciels Boutique Hotel offers delightfully contemporary accommodation and top-quality services in the modern district of Gueliz – it was time for me to uncover a new side of my beloved Marrakech.
When one thinks of Marrakech, images of dusty red streets, bustling markets and an exotic aura drifting through the air may be the first things that come to mind: but on my most recent trip, I discovered that this wonderful city is so much more than that. In the stylish, contemporary area of Gueliz, the refined and chic establishment of the 2Ciels Boutique Hotel was ready and waiting to show me the modern and luxurious side of this well-loved destination.
As I stepped out of the intense heat of the sun and strolled into the light and elegant interior of the hotel, it was like taking a breath of fresh air. After being ushered with a smile towards my spacious Charm Room, I discovered a beautifully appointed space illuminated from the light pouring in the windows, beyond which was a large balcony looking onto the verdant Harti gardens. Although the room was decorated in a wonderfully contemporary Moroccan style reminiscent of Art Deco, authentic traditional handicrafts were artfully placed around the room, making for a mesmerising mix of old and new. Sumptuous extras such as Egyptian cotton, exclusive toiletries and handmade tiles added an alluring touch of luxury.
I began my explorations in the surrounding area of Gueliz, which oozes exhilaration thanks to its never-ending array of shops, modern restaurants and bars. However, just because I’d seen the typical Marrakech sights before, didn’t mean I could refrain from revisiting them; and the dizzying hub of the souks and the magic aura of the Jemaa el-Fnaa square was just a half an hour stroll away. In the late afternoon, slight worn out by the city’s constant buzz, I returned to my relaxing haven to indulge in a spot of pampering in the spa, where my cares were carried away by a session in the traditional steam bath or a treatment or two.
And when it came to cuisine, I was simply spoilt for choice. The Patron de la Mer restaurant offers deliciously fresh seafood in a stylish setting, and I spent many a starry night upon the rooftop, where the Lola Sky Lounge offered stunning views of the city and the Atlas Mountains alongside its tapas and juice bar. It was a different side of Marrakech to those I had previously experienced, but one that I enjoy tremendously – I couldn’t wait to return to this urban oasis in the heart of the Red City.
