It's a peculiarly British pursuit, isn't it? Buy a run-down farmhouse in a pretty corner of northern France, and then spend every spare moment zipping back and forth across the channel, slaving away at making the house a home. Why gussy up a glorified shed when there are any number of beautiful buildings in bucolic surroundings just waiting to welcome me? Let the DIY crowd keep their projects, I say. I'm off to the Domaine de Villers & Spa, a mellow timber-framed country house on the outskirts of genteel Deauville.

BY PLANE

  • Caen–Carpiquet Airport (CFR), sits 6km / 3.7 mi / to the west of Caen and around 45 minute's drive from the hotel. This airport receives a handful of national flights, so a transfer for example in Lyon is required.

    Alternatively, the airports of Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG), Paris Orly (ORY), and Paris Beauvais are all within 2 and 2 and a half hours' drive from the hotel. Between them, they receive flights from most capitals and major cities across Europe, including the UK.
