Since the days of Louis XIV – the self-proclaimed “sun king” obsessed with the performing arts – France has been enthralled by the theatre. Toeing the line between risqué comedy and tragic drama, the Comédie Française brought together nobility and commoners. At the Château des Reynats ****, the two worlds collided quite literally, when in 1840 a wealthy French noble fell in love with the theatre troupe and built the castle as their summer residence. Nearly two centuries later, the château still retains its blend of noble grandeur and theatrical glamour.
On first approach, the Château Reynats **** strikes an imposing scene, its grounds and ancient oaks drawing apart a leafy curtain to reveal the pointed turrets and ornate windows of this typical 19th century château. Inside, this historical backdrop is draped with theatrical flair, celebrating the vibrant colours and passion of vintage theatre. Crimson tasselled drapes adorn the reception chairs while harlequin stripes brighten the walls. Each room, from the cosy Standard to the lavish Suite, sets a different scene, with flourishes of vibrant colour and art painting all incorporating a different theme.
In the gourmet restaurant l’Oison, huge glittering chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling curtains set the stage for a truly regal interlude, as the creative, colourful dishes of lobster, squab, and truffles enter stage left in a waltz of colour, scent, and taste.
Outside, further entertainment awaits with the outdoor pool, vast grounds, and pretty valleys beyond. Reserve your seat at the Château Reynats **** and enjoy the show!
