As we meandered onto the Strada Franceză for the first time, I soon understood how Budapest earned the nickname “Little Paris”. A mêlée of chic cafés, clubs and bars spilt onto the cobbled street, buzzing with the chatter of busy locals and excited tourists like ourselves. So handsome were the surrounding Baroque houses, in fact, that we almost passed by the Mansion Boutique Hotel ****, signalled only by a tasteful gold plaque by its stately front door. I read that this was once a hotel frequented by glittering aristocracy and even royalty; who knew what luxurious delights I might find inside?
Far from the regal façade outside that harked back to old-world elegance, the bright and spacious lobby boasted modern, haute-design with eclectic vintage pieces and the occasional splash of colour. It was as surprising as it was charming – and best of all it was immensely welcoming. Each of the 19 rooms had their own completely individual personalities, designed to take you on a journey across the world. While their style may differ, there is something they all have in common; unparalleled comfort and your satisfaction in mind.
After an à la carte breakfast that would be fit for a king, only minutes’ stroll stood between us and the beating heart of Bucharest. With every inch of the city steeped in rich, dynamic history even the streets themselves were fascinating sights. This city is truly an undiscovered gem, with the Mansion Boutique Hotel **** as its best kept secret. Let’s just keep it between us though, shall we?
