View all offersBefore I even laid eyes on any of the spectacular palaces or jaw-dropping churches that grace Naples’ streets, I felt like I already had an authentic feel of the city simply from the walk there. The aroma of baking pizza tantalised me as I passed the abundance of restaurants, the animated Italian chatter making me wish I paid more attention in GCSE Italian. Despite its city’s grandeur it all felt strangely familiar and immensely welcoming – just like the Palazzo Salgar.
The hotel itself embodied all the traits I discovered on my way here; the ultra-sophisticated lobby dressed in black and gold reminded me of the formidable beauty of the city, while the friendly faces who welcomed me inside were typical of the Italian warmth I’d heard so much about. The concierge was on hand to point me in the direction of their personal favourite hangouts and trips, none of which were more than a leisurely stroll from the hotel’s doorstep. Having finally rid myself of my suitcase in my room, I couldn’t help but soak up the view for a while in the company of golden silence. This, I thought, was bliss.
Something that drew me to Naples in the first place was the city’s reputation as a heavyweight in Italy’s gastronomic ranks. The Palazzo Salgar was no different – from a splendid spread at breakfast that could satisfy any appetite, to the sumptuous Neapolitan cuisine served fresh in the evenings, the food lingered on my mind for weeks after I left. While I sometimes treated myself to an afternoon in the Turkish bath (I remain convinced there is no better way to relax) my days were best spent soaking up the atmosphere in this spectacular city, either by visiting churches or watching the world go by. Naples has a contagious love for life – and it all begins at the Palazzo Salgar.
