At first glance, I thought a sun-soaked trip to Fuerteventura would be filled with classic Spanish clichés – as much as I do secretly enjoy those. Yet the surreal lunar landscapes of the island, together with the VIK Suite Hotel Risco del Gato ****, is a world away from your cut-and-paste template of a Spanish holiday. Here individual bespoke service is the name of the game, where rooms closer resemble miniature villas and quirky architecture fits into the landscape like a glove. Blending in has never stood out so much.

  • The island is served by Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), also known as El Matorral Airport, located in El Matorral, around 5 km / 3.1 mi south of the capital city, Puerto del Rosario. The airport is located around 65 km / 40 mi (a little over 1 hours' drive) northeast of the hotel.

    The airport is fairly well served internationally, with a large number of direct flights from capitals and other large cities across Europe.
