View all offersHotel Spa Empúries sits on the Catalan coast – so named the wild coast, for its beautifully rugged Mediterranean coastline. Visitors can journey to the nearby ruins to see the remains of the forum, the amphitheatre, a fortress and the old factory, all carefully preserved.
Although the hotel is over 100 years old, you would never know it as it has been completely renovated to reflect its modern approach to tourism. Their use of sustainable and recyclable materials in its renovations as well as its commitment to using locally sourced organic food and products means that guests avoid any guilt about their decision to indulge.
Like the rest of the hotel, the rooms are all light and air. The streamlined furnishings in neutral tones with light touches of colour add to the tranquillity of the space. While we might like the comfort of our room, there are too many other spaces to enjoy. We spend quiet time in the cosy library and get fresh air walking along the peaceful Portitxol beach in front of the hotel.
We visited the Bistró del Mar in the mornings for our complimentary breakfast, where we fill up on mixed-seed breads, homemade marmalades and local cheeses. That said, the star of the show is the Villa Teresita restaurant. In this intimate space, guests can dine on Mediterranean haute cuisine while enjoying a panoramic view of the sea. The food is either grown on the property or comes from local farms, ensuring the freshness of all the seasonal ingredients that go into the innovative dishes created by head chef, Rafa Peña.
It doesn’t take long to realize that well-being is a way of life at the Hotel Spa Empúries. We enjoy Hatha yoga by the sea and take the hotel bicycles, our eco-friendly transport, for long rides along the coast. I’m also willing to consider taking advantage of the recreational pool, the lap pool, or the unique gym, but the eco-friendly spa treatments are admittedly more my style. With special products like hand-collected seaweed, mineral-rich salts, and clay from the Atlantic coast, each carefully sourced and chosen for its eco-responsible mission. It is this attention to detail that makes me thankful to have found a hotel as unique as this one to enjoy my stay on the Catalan coast.
