Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel ★★★★

As you arrive in Porto for the first time, you can't help but feel overwhelmed by its history. Porto is one of the oldest centres in Europe and you see proof of its age everywhere you turn. Your hotel, a 41-room building featuring all comforts of home, is part of this history. The establishment sits in Europe’s first stationary shop, Papelaria Araújo e Sobrinho, which first went into business in 1829, and the lobby still has displays from that era.

Heading to your room, you immediately notice the wonderful view of the city from your window. It's easy to see why this is such a sought-after location, as you look down at the cobblestone streets below and the cafes that line them. Your room is a mix of modern and antique, with classic furniture, a contemporary bathroom, a mini-bar and other homelike comforts. Realising that you haven't had a bite since your arrival in Porto, you take the stairs to the on-site Galeria do Largo Restaurant, where Portuguese dishes are aplenty, and the food is fantastic.

Finally fed, you head back through the lobby where you are steps from Porto Cathedral, Bolsa Palace, Cordoaria's Garden and Clérigos Tower. There's too much history to explore in one day, so luckily more nights await at the wonderful Porto A.S. 1829 Hotel ****.
