It is said that the Greek goddess Artemis transformed her nymph Arethusa into an underground stream, from Greece all the way to Sicily, to help her escape the advances of the river god Alpheus. She continues to bubble up as a freshwater fountain on Ortygia to this day. Winding my way down from the Minareto towards the sparkling sea, across the way from Ortygia, I think how I would happily spend the rest of my days simply trickling down these rocks, basking in sunshine.
This is just one of many local myths and legends associated to Syracuse. Mythology aside, it is also rich with fascinating culture and history. It was home to the great Archimedes, famous for his principles on displacement of water. I for one, spent a great deal of my time here keeping cool by displacing the waters of the Mediterranean Sea!
Situated in a marine nature reserve, the hotel’s spectacular setting is secluded and surrounded by protected flora and fauna. Below, the shimmering waters are full of diverse marine life, including dolphins and sperm whales, and historic artefacts, such as WWII wrecks. The terraces of the hotel enjoy unspoilt views over the Mediterranean and Ortygia.
Poolside parasols provide shelter while you enjoy an ice-cold cocktail, and the hotel’s private cove is a beautiful sunbathing paradise. I could while away many a happy hour armed with just a book and a bottle of sun cream (I am a pasty Englishman, after all). Otherwise, the Whirlpool Bath Terrace or Cliffside Solarium offer other luxurious alternatives.
There is an old Italian saying “he who goes to bed without eating will regret it throughout the night”. Fortunately, the hotel offers a choice of restaurants. Dinner on the terrace of the Nesos Restaurant is a scenic, delicious and typically Mediterranean affair, with plenty of finesse and panache. The poolside Grill and Bar offers an alternative relaxed ambiance.
The hotel’s architecture and design live up to its beautiful surroundings. The communal spaces and bedrooms are expertly designed to reflect the Italian obsession with luxury and baroque style. From the marble and chandeliers in the lobby to the Persian rugs and classical sculptures in the bedrooms, everything exudes an air of rococo opulence. High-tech facilities extend throughout the rooms, the gym, and even the modern spa.
All this luxury, coupled with ancient treasures and natural beauty, awaits you at the paradise that is Minareto.
