Nhow Milan ★★★★

Milan became a fashion capital seemingly all at once, when a number of Milanese houses suddenly rose to international fame in the eighties. Henceforth, it’s been a key-player in all things art and design. Other industries, however, didn’t fare as well, so by the start of the next century, the city began major developments, like Porta Nuova and CityLife, in order to kickstart other sectors. But it has, in fact, been a centre for fashion and design since the Middle Ages, where it was renowned for its production of luxury goods.

When business boomed in the eighties, Zona Tortona immediately began its transformation from a predominantly blue-collar sector into a stylish, chic area geared toward design. Inside, splashes of colour illuminate postmodernist furnishings, so that it almost feels like contemporary art in and of itself. It makes sense, then, that there are regular art exhibitions in the lobby space, which is changed every six months. Stay in the Premium or Superior Rooms for two, both brilliantly eclectic spaces with cleverly designed lighting that adds splashes of eccentric colour. Expect all the amenities you could need, including Wi-Fi, TV, and a well-stocked minibar.

As you enter the hotel, marvel at the brilliant sculptural furnishings found in the communal spaces. Since the hotel changes these interiors so often, they are always on the cutting-edge of contemporary design. Lots of excellent artwork adorns the walls, much of which you can inquire to purchase if you’re so inclined. A state-of-the-art gym is free for guests to use, as is the Turkish Bath that you can relax in afterwards. Enjoy a drink at the wonderful lounge bar, designed by the prolific Karim Rashid, where the staff are about as ultra-hospitable as the space is ultra-modern. Chill out on the outdoor terrace, littered with wildly colourful furnishings that playfully contrast the industrial pipes snaking along the sides of the building.
