Sicily is one of the most enigmatic places to me. The crossroads of Europe and Africa, it has always been a melting pot of influences and a crucible of culture. With dramatic volcanic mountains and the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, its natural charms are immense. The sun is also almost guaranteed to be shining no matter what time of year you visit, and I was watching it illuminating the terracotta roofs of the traditional houses on the way as we made the journey to I Monasteri Golf Resort.
The resort itself is in a beautiful old Benedictine monastery. Gleaming white and surrounded by old stone walls, it stands in vast grounds that have been sculpted into a prestigious golf course. The arched roofs, elegant courtyards and gardens make for a dignified first impression. We requested a room with a view of the golf course and the sunset.
I flung open the doors to our veranda and let the sweet smells of Sicilian fragrance into our room. It was a tranquil room, with plenty of natural light. The décor was understated and minimalist, in neutral colours and white. Furnishings were unfussy, and the overall effect was calming, luxurious and simple.
We had a few hours before our friends arrived, so we explored the hotel. Sturdy pillars and arches were a reminder of the building’s hallowed history and made for an impressive interior design. Next, we checked out the coffee and the view from the restaurant, two things that are very important to the quality of my stay. The clement weather meant we could sit outside on the restaurant's terrace. The view was open and beautiful, and displayed the sunset perfectly.
We had a great week at I Monasteri Golf Resort, though it was a little clichéd in its gender division. The men were mostly to be found at the golf course, while my female friend and I made good use of the spa. With such a menu of facilities and therapies in a dreamy and serene environment, I guess you can say I realised what my weakness is!
