Of all the peoples, the Greeks have dreamt the dream of life best – Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe.
Upon arriving at the brand new, five-star Sea Sound White Katikies, I felt as though I was in paradise, lush shrubbery, interspersed with bold pink and red flowers created a picture-perfect scene. By the shore, beyond the pool, old boats interrupted the endless blue of the ocean that stretched as far as the eyes can see. It was quite mesmerizing to see nothing but a vast blue blanket before my eyes.
I plunged into the glistening turquoise outdoor pool as soon as we left down the bags and grabbed a pool towel, the cool water waking me up from my midday slumber. The cheerful chirping of birds and salty sea air was all I needed to escape into a peaceful daydream. To exit to the beach, just follow the footpath to the enchanting blue wooden gate, tucked below an imposing white archway. I felt the gritty pebbles under my flip flops, before plonking down on a sun bed, shades and a book in hand.
From the wooden decking, my partner and I would sit, sipping Ouzo and listening to the gentle rustle of our surroundings, and the crash of waves against the pebbled shore. We certainly appreciated the delicious food at the restaurant, from sandwiches to pasta and glazed salmon, not to mention the wine and fruit in our room when we arrived. Shopaholics like myself will be glad to stumble upon the delightful boutique to try on beautiful dresses, while animal lovers can enjoy horse riding along the beach.
Spectacular sunsets graced the island every evening, one we especially enjoyed was that from the old Venetian castle of Skaros in Imerovigil, and dusk at the Akrotiri lighthouse. With its rich, fertile, volcanic soil, Santorini offers some of the best wines in Greece. There are more than 18 wineries in Santorini, so be sure to treat yourself to a wine tasting, as you unravel the wonders of this magical island.
