Hotel Doña Maria ★★★★

A little piece of Andalusian history in the heart of Seville

By Esme Fox, VeryChic correspondent
Think of a romantic city break and you’ll probably picture Paris, Rome or Venice, but here’s why Seville should be the next destination for your romantic getaway: narrow snaking alleyways, punctuated by idyllic plazas, trickling fountains and gnarled olive trees. It’s a step back in time with an ancient Moorish palace, an impressive cathedral and horse and carriages that still roam the streets. The city embodies everything that one might associate with Spain – sun, flamenco, bullfighting and Spanish guitar. And for a city filled with such historic beauty it’s only befitting that your accommodation be the same. Housed in an old palace, the Hotel Doña María is itself a piece of history. Filled with famous artworks and antique furniture, it’s an important record of times gone by.

  • Seville is possibly one of the most traditional cities in Spain, but that doesn’t mean it’s without its trendy and modern venues too. To witness and sample Seville’s tapas revolution check out Ovejas Negras www.ovejasnegrastapas.com. It offers innovative tapas dishes and modern takes on original favourites, served creatively in mini frying pans and glass jars. Calle Hernando Colon 8.
  • Known as the perfect place for a romantic dinner date in Seville, El Giradillo provides some of the best views of La Giralda tower in the city. It’s a great place to sample upmarket traditional Andalusian fare. Plaza Virgen de los Reyes 2.
  • Seville is so crammed with various places offering flamenco ‘authentic’ dinner and flamenco shows that it can be hard to know which to choose. While many are simply tourist traps, La Carboneria is the real thing – a large garage in a converted coal yard where performances are free. Calle Levies 18.
