Mama Shelter Istanbul ★★★★

Past meets present, styled by Mama Shelter in the historical city of Istanbul.

By Edward Fairbairn, VeryChic correspondent
If you haven’t heard of Mama Shelter, you are really missing out. The group has already made itself a household name on the French hotel scene - its establishments in Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux have all become synonymous with style, energy and comfort, offering a friendly vibe and a lively night scene. The concept is the brainchild of a prestigious trinity of hotel specialists – world-renowned design guru Philippe Starck, philosopher-hotelier Cyril Aouizerate, and the Club Med giants of the Trigano family. Sound good so far? Well, VeryChic invites you to the border of Europe and Asia to enjoy Mama Shelter Istanbul with its chic rooftop bar and terrace, top DJ sets and edgy vibe.

Turkey

The Mama Shelter Istanbul is located in Beyoglu, the new trendy area on the European side of the richly historical city of Istanbul. The area is filled with art galleries, theatres, cinemas and chic bars and restaurants.

BY PLANE

  • Istanbul currently has two airports: Ataturk Airport on the European side and the new Sabiha Gokcen Airport on the Asian side.
    - From the UK: Direct flights from London to Istanbul are available from British Airways and Turkish Airlines. The same companies provide indirect flights from other major cities in the UK.

    - From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, you can find direct flights provided by Turkish Airlines.

    - From Germany: Pegasus Airlines and Turkish Airlines provide direct flights from most major cities, including: Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt and Munich.

    - From the Netherlands: Departing from Amsterdam, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Pegasus and Transavia all provide direct flights. Flying out from Rotterdam, both Turkish Airlines and Transavia provide direct flights, and from Eindhoven, Transavia.

    - From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: Turkish Airlines fly direct from all the respective capital cities: Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo and Helsinki. Norwegian also fly direct from Oslo, and Pegasus also fly direct from Copenhagen.

    - From France: Direct flights from both Paris and Marseille are provided by Air France, Turkish Airlines and Pegasus. Turkish Airlines also provide direct flights from other major cities including Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse and Nice.

TRANSFER FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

  • We recommend choosing a flight to Ataturk Airport, which is a little closer to the hotel. (Note, get some Turkish Lira before leaving the airport as the buses etc. rarely accept cards.)

    From Ataturk Airport:

    - By taxi: It takes around 30-60 minutes to get to the hotel, and should cost around 30-60 Turkish Lira (around £7-£14).

    - By bus: The bus service, Havatas, departs every 30 minutes and costs 10 Turkish Lira (around £2.30) per person. Departures from both the airport and Taksim (in the city centre) run from 4 am to 1 am.

    From Sabiha Gokcen Airport:
    - By taxi: It takes around 55-90 minutes to get to the hotel, and should cost around 40-70 Turkish Lira (around £9-£16).

    - By bus: Similarly, Havatas run buses every 30 minutes (between 4 am to 1 am) from the airport to Taksim, (and between 3.30 am to 1 am returning from Taksim to the airport). Tickets cost 13 Turkish Lira (around £3) per person. Once in Taksim, it is only a few minutes to the hotel by taxi.
    Havatas – Ataturk-Taksim
    Havatas – Sabiha-Taksim
    Havatas – Sabiha-Kadikoy

BY TRAIN

  • Istanbul is well connected by train, with trains to Istanbul departing from all major cities across Europe and Asia. Trains from Europe arrive at Sirkeci (note that InterRail tickets are valid in Istanbul but only on the European side and not in the Asian region).

BY BOAT

  • It is also possible to make the trip to Istanbul by sea. Arrivals and departures by ferry and cruise ship etc. take place in the Port of Karaköy where there are many international connections. The Karaköy district itself is a major transport hub, commercial district and touristic area.

BY CAR

  • The E-80, E-90 and Trans-European Network (TEN) are the three main roads that connect Turkey with the capitals of Europe. The E-80 is the main road, which goes from the Turkish border in Edirne to Istanbul and Ankara. Even though it is possible to enter the city by car, it is not recommended as traffic is incredibly dense.
