By Siena Morrell, VeryChic correspondent
I won’t lie: I have never been able to shake my reservations about themed hotels. France’s capital now boasts a handful of eclectic design hotels, and for some reason unknown to me, they remain popular as ever. So, when a friend whose judgement I never question suggested I stay at the Secret de Paris, my interest was piqued: rather than laughing him off, I made my reservation. Nowadays, “unique” and “original” are sympathetic synonyms for “nice try, but not for me.” But, I have a secret to share, and I’m (almost) not ashamed to admit it: I have been converted. Hats off to proprietor Christophe Mendjel and creative visionary Sandrine Alouf : the Hotel Design Secret de Paris **** may have proved me wrong.

  • Cendrillon, Zizi, and Tosca: no, not more opera, but names of the iconic ballerina flats that come from Repetto. Embrace your Parisian street style, and purchase a pair at the legendary boutique. www.repetto.com - 22 rue de la Paix, 75002
  • Take it one step further and head to the charming boutiques of Le Marais for some serious retail therapy. Here you can find designers like Sandro and Theory alongside an assortment of exciting independent shops: our choices are Jimmy Fairly, for excellent eyewear, and Leon & Harper or ELEVENPARIS for some casual, typically on-trend garments.
  • Wrap up a day with a toasty falafel: Paris’s famous street food is legendary, for good reason. My alliance lies with L’As du Fallafel, where I first tried the delicious pitas piled high with indulgent treats when I first arrived in Paris. Get extra aubergine, you won’t regret it.
