Biarritz’s remarkable rags-to-riches transformation from small whaling village to stylish seaside resort was as rapid as it was extreme. A rural fishing community for centuries, the village was thrown into the spotlight by the visits of Napoleon III and his wife Eugénie in the mid-19th century. Within decades, Biarritz had firmly established its reputation as ‘the queen of resorts and resort of kings’, and remains a glamorous and popular destination to this day. The Hotel de Silhouette is found in one of Biarritz’s oldest buildings, providing a cosy, and comfortable retreat in style.
