The Costa Brava - the Wild Coast in its native Catalan. Wild… Wild for its craggy cliffs, unspoiled beaches and verdant forests? Or wild for the rowdy hordes of tourists crowding onto packed beaches without a bare patch of sand in sight? Anyone who knows the Costa Brava knows that it has seen more of the latter than the former in recent times. You might even wonder if there’s anything left of the real wild coast at all. Well, there is, you just need to know where to look – specifically for a sublime little inlet on the Costa Brava, lost among pine forests and cliffs, where the Aigua Brava hotel took root at the start of the century. This is a place that has hung on tight to its family values, all while offering the best of four-star luxury on the north-eastern shores of Spain.

There’s the Costa Brava that most people know and then there’s the other Costa Brava, the one with natural coves at the end of winding pathways through the heart of a pine forest. It’s the one you’d never happen across by chance. The bays of Begur are among Spain’s finest ornaments, yet they’re the kind you might only hear about from a well-travelled friend. Begur is a medieval village, poised on a rocky peak and edged with eight fabulous protected beaches. As difficult to find as it is to leave, this nature is marked out by its raw beauty, with the chain of mountains in the background and the great wide blue ahead. As it happens, that’s where we’re going; Aigua Blava – Blue Waters in Catalan – the eponymous hotel.

Imagine a road lacing its way through a fragrant pine forest with staggering views at every turn. At the end of the line, a little marina and a wild cove are discreetly overlooked by the hotel. This is an intimate and unique locale, built in 1934 on the site of the El Paradis. Yes, our Aigua Blava Hotel is no less than heaven on earth for its location and for its warm and familiar welcome.

Here, on the flank of a hill, with our feet dangling in the water, we are far away from the hype of the Costa Brava’s hotspots. We are in the most beautiful bay in Begur – the whole of the Costa Brava, even – known only to insiders. Just take a peep at the clientele, loyal followers who return year after year.

Once you’ve discovered this little patch of land, it’s almost impossible to take yourself off anywhere else. There’s no hint of glitz or ostentation, just the ‘essentials’ of absolute ease; spacious, comfortable rooms with views of the luxuriant gardens or the sea. In the restaurant, the menu, dreamed up by chef Lluis Ferres, makes marvels of the local, seasonal produce and there is also a seawater pool with direct access to the ocean. The days begin with a lavish breakfast, a few lengths of breaststroke or a game of tennis, followed by a walk on the almost-empty Aigua Blava beach, or a venture further afield into the surrounding countryside. Between medieval towns and fishing villages, the whole region brims with treasures, all the better for being completely unknown to most visitors on the tourist trails. Treasures like this hotel, nestled into natural surroundings, are the perfect illustration of the Costa Brava, the Wild Coast.

Set on a hillside with steps leading down to a secluded cove, the Aigua Blava is located on one of Costa Brava’s best beaches in Begur, an hour east of Girona in northeast Spain.

The nearest airport is Girona–Costa Brava Airport, around an hour from the hotel. Ryanair offer year-round & seasonal flights from many cities across Europe to Girona while some other low-cost airlines also operate seasonal flights from particular countries, like Thomson Airways from the UK or Transavia from the Netherlands.

You will also find a much larger selection of international flights to Barcelona-El Prat Airport, one hour and 45 minutes from the hotel. Flights are listed below:

- From the UK: British Airways and low cost Monarch, Vueling and EasyJet all operate direct flights out of London. EasyJet also fly direct from Bristol and Belfast, while Ryanair fly direct from Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

- From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, you can find direct flights operated by Aer Lingus and Ryanair, while Ryanair also fly direct from Cork.

- From Germany: Carriers flying direct out of Berlin include: Air Berlin, Iberia, Vueling, EasyJet and Germanwings. Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines also fly direct out of Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich. Vueling also fly out of Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich.

- From the Netherlands: KLM, Iberia, Vueling and Transavia all provide direct flights from Amsterdam to Barcelona, while Transavia also fly direct out of Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

- From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: SAS, Norwegian and Vueling fly direct from Stockholm, Sweden, Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark. Ryanair also fly out of Stockholm and Oslo. Finnair, Iberia, Vueling and Norwegian fly direct from Helsinki, Finland.

- From France: Air France, Iberia, Vueling and EasyJet all fly direct from Paris. Vueling airlines further provide direct flights from Lyon, Toulouse, Marseille and Nice, while EasyJet also fly direct from Lyon and Nice.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

From Girona Airport, there are four daily buses to Palafrugell which take an hour and a half and cost 6€ - 8€. From there, it is a 10 minute taxi journey to the hotel. Alternatively, a taxi will take just under an hour and will cost 70€ - 85€.

From Barcelona Airport, there is a Renfe train which goes to the city centre every half an hour and takes 15-20 minutes. Get off at Sants or Passeig de Gracia and from there, take the AVE train to Girona which will take around 40 minutes and will cost 16€ - 22€. From Girona, get the 15 minute train to Flassa and it is then a half an hour taxi journey to the hotel.

BY CAR

From Barcelona on the AP-7 motorway, take exit 9 at Vidreres and follow the signs for Palamós. Go along the C-35 until you reach Llagostera, take the C-65 and C-31, which passes through Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Platja d’Aro and Palamós. Take exit 331, following the signs for Mont-ras/Palafrugell Sud at the roundabout on the GI-655 heading to Palafrugell, take the GI-650 towards Regencós and the GI-653 towards Begur. Pass through Begur and continue along the GIP-6531 and GIV-6532 heading towards Aigua Blava.

From France on the A-9, take the AP-7 motorway when you get into Spain and take exit 6 at Girona following signs for Palamós. Continue along the C-66, passing through La Bisbal d’Empordà until you reach Torrent. Take the GI-652 towards Pals and then the GI-650 towards Regencós and the GI-653 towards Begur. Pass through Begur and continue along the GIP-6531 and GIV-6532 heading towards Aigua Blava.
