Grand Hotel Casselbergh ★★★★

Charm and comfort in the heart of beautiful Bruges.

Remarkable
8.8 /10
By Jo Weston, correspondent for VeryChic
The lovely little city of Bruges sometimes makes me think of the famous car hire slogan that went something like ‘We are second, so we try harder.’ Found in the shadow of its mighty neighbour, the European powerhouse of Brussels, and nicknamed ‘the Venice of the North’, as though it should aspire to be Venice, it is easy to assume that this gem of a city is somehow second to its beautiful sisters. However, it shines with a distinct brilliance and beauty, and it’s very own magical and magnetic appeal. And for me, the Grand Hotel Casselbergh embodied all that is so special about Bruges.

  • Bruges Town Hall. The exterior is impressive, but inside the golden arches of the ceiling and fresco-covered walls are even more so.

  • The name Bruges probably derives from the old Dutch for ‘bridge’. The Horse Bridge on Peerdenstraat is the best viewing point for the romantic ‘green canal’, which is lined with trees and ivy and 17th century mansions, with the Cathedral tower rising up behind them.

The Grand Hotel Casselbergh **** is located in Bruges, just steps from the Grand Place. The Bruges train station is at a 20 minutes walk.

BY PLANE

  • Ostend–Bruges International Airport (OST), or simply Ostend Airport, sits 25 km / 15 mi from Bruges centre. The airport is very little served however, with a handful of flights from mainly Spain and Greece.

The closest well-served airport is Brussels National Airport (BRU), just northeast of Brussels, and about 112 km / 70 mi east of Bruges. It receives flights from many major cities across Europe, including the UK.

FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

  • From Brussels National Airport:
    • Taxi: licensed taxis can by recognised by the blue and yellow emblem and should take around 20-30 minutes to reach the city centre. From the city centre, take the train to Bruges.
    • Train: an airport express train operates to the city centre. From there take the train in the direction of Bruges to the hotel. Bruges is not the terminus; therefore look for trains going to either Oostende or Blankenberge.

    From Brussels-South Charleroi Airport:
    • Taxi: taxis should offer a fixed price to Brussels city centre, taking about 1 hour, and may be cost-efficient if shared between four passengers. From the city centre you can take a train to Bruges.
    • Bus and train: shuttle buses run once an hour every day to Brussels-Midi station and take about 45 minutes. From there walk to Brussels-South railway station and take the 2838 Knokke train to the hotel (Brugge).
