What I love about Italy is that no matter how many times you go, there is always something new to discover, whether it’s another region to explore or a new cuisine to try. This time we decided to visit the Lake Garda region – the largest lake in Italy, with breathtaking scenery that has been inspiring artists for centuries.
Set in this timeless rural landscape, we arrived at the Palazzo Arzaga Hotel Spa & Golf Resort *****. It is housed in a 15th-century palace that has been masterfully renovated without losing its authenticity. As we walked inside, I was delighted to find antique furniture, high ceilings and walls covered in frescoes by the Baroque painter Guido Reni - a world away from the minimalism of many modern hotels.
The bedrooms have the same authentic feel, with antique furniture, rich textiles and a thick carpet. The bathroom was spacious and the towels and bathrobes were lovely and soft. From our room we enjoyed a magical view over the surrounding countryside. I knew at once that this would be the ideal place to recharge my batteries, turn off my phone and finally get stuck into that book I’ve been meaning to read for months.
Still, there is plenty for sports fans too. Golfers will be in heaven; the Arzaga Golf Club is just exceptional, with wonderful views of the Alps. Non-golfers can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, bordered with sun loungers and parasols.
I decided to save my book for later and head straight to the spa. With a gentle atmosphere, soft lighting and delicious perfumes, it is simply heavenly. I treated myself to a massage and left feeling relaxed, light and perfectly content.
Sitting on the terrace in a beautiful setting, we watched the sun set and sipped on a spritz before dinner - the famous orange cocktail based on Aperol. The evening was mild, so we sat outside at Il Moretto Restaurant and enjoyed a classic Italian feast. The menu features wonderful pasta dishes, of course, but also fresh fish, vegetables and delicious mozzarella… a lovely taste of the best of Italy.
The Palazzo Arzaga Hotel Spa & Golf Resort ***** is also very good at breakfasts. Served in a pretty inner courtyard, it is the most idyllic way to start the day. Of course, it helps that the Italians are the masters of good coffee.
