Castello di Tornano ★★★★

Tuscany is such a rich and rustic region, but nothing prepared me for the traditional charm of the Castello di Tornano. When I first sighted the medieval castle, tucked amidst the rolling vineyards of the Italian countryside, it was hard to imagine that it housed a modern hotel. This impression floundered when I crossed the old moat, which has now been converted into a chic and unique swimming pool, and arrived at the ancient fortress.

Inside, the décor ranges from Renaissance to Baroque; a flurry of rich, velvet curtains, textured, earth-toned walls, and a hearty dose of elegance. I’m immediately transported back six-hundred years, to a time when the glamour of glass chandeliers, baroque motifs, and patterned sofas were reserved only for the elite.

The backstory of this unusual residence has its roots in the early Middle Ages, when the area was a part of the Carolingian Empire. At that time, the land was owned by three brothers with strange, musical names. Atroald, Adonald, and Adopald sounded like they’d stepped right out of a children’s book. Five-hundred years later, the castle still retains its fairytale appeal, though it has been through a lot to get here. During its life, it has served as the backdrop for regal threats, epic battles, abductions, and incredible political negotiations.

But today it is reborn, the turbulent times disappearing into the serene décor, instead serving up a narrative of valiant knights and enchanting princesses. This fabled personality is reflected in my room, which is an intimate affair with muted orange walls and a beamed ceiling. I particularly love the heavy, dark-wood furniture which is offset with a warm glow, and thick, plush curtains in rich reds and ochre tones. With the colour red in mind, I turn my attention to the bottle of wine waiting for me on arrival. Plucked straight from the castle’s cellar, it is the perfect introduction to my time in Tuscany.

The next morning, when the hazy Italian sun shows its face, I go down for breakfast on the cosy terrace. There’s nothing quite like tucking into a local feast whilst gazing out across the rivulets of the Tuscan countryside. Then I’m off on a tour around the old, brick-walled cellars and the lush, green vineyards to sample some of the liquid flavours of Italy. A refreshing dip in the hotel’s quirky pool is in order on my return, where I soak up the heady, tranquil atmosphere and revel in the old watchful eye of the castle.

As darkness swathes the area, I head to the restaurant, where I’m greeted by an exquisite menu bursting with fresh, Italian flavours. My mouth waters at the prospect of pheasant, wild boar, and handpicked vegetables – food that was made for royalty. The restaurant is just as beautiful as the rest of the hotel, with the aura of a grand buffet laden with silver platters and the most luxurious ingredients.

Wanting to explore more of Tuscany’s historic appeal, I venture to the nearby towns that are alive with old culture and rustic architecture. Then, like a queen on a regal tour, I head home to rest my head in the elegant comfort of the Castello di Tornano.
