Not so long ago, Koh Samui was an isolated self-sufficient community and had little connection with the mainland of Thailand. It did not even have roads until the early 1970s, and the 15km journey from one side of the island to the other could involve a whole-day trek through the mountainous central jungles. Although the eastern side of the island has seen much development since then, tourists rarely venture to the western side, known as the Virgin Coast.   • There are a couple of local food products that you should try during your stay. Salted eggs are popular on the island, as is Rambutan, a fruit native to tropical South East Asia. It means 'hair', which is a reference to the spines covering its skin.
  • Go and see the natural and slightly unusual (I'll let you discover why for yourself!) geological formations known as Hin Ta and Hin Yai Rocks (the Grandpa and Grandma rocks). The rocks are located off Route 4169 on Samui’s south-east coast, about two kilometres south of central Lamai Beach.
  • To experience Thailand’s rich culture, make sure you visit its temples. The most famous one is the Wat Phra Yai, but if you go to Wat Khunaram you can see the mummified monk, or Wat Samret with all its small statues in the chapel.
  • Spend an afternoon with Trash Hero and help clean the beaches for an afternoon, to help promote sustainability on the island.
