“O for a beaker full of the warm South … With beaded bubbles winking at the brim, And purple-stained mouth…” Keats’ magical words were drifting through my mind as I trudged home under yet another grey-filled sky. My daydream turned to a picture of blue skies and seas, white sand, warm southern sunshine … and an idea of a holiday break just for two started to form. When I got home and turned the key in the door, my partner, the genius, said ‘Maybe we should get away somewhere warm, with blue skies and white sand – what do you think?’ He had already found the new AMA Hotel Andalucía. Serendipity!

When we arrived in Huelva in the lovely region of Andalucía, we were struck by the soft warm air and gentle Atlantic breeze. We felt refreshed already and we had not even begun! Even though the hotel is new, everything looks calm and smooth with a friendly greeting from the excellent staff when we arrived. We were shown to our huge room with luxurious modern furnishing and serene pastel colours. The décor was Moorish-inspired modern with quirky touches: the painting of a pink flying pig on the wall made us smile and relax. The superb bathroom was large and with all the little extra touches you could wish for. We were lucky and had a balcony with a big open view towards the sea. More temptation and anticipation of the pleasures to come.

A trip to the pool quickly cleared away any lingering travel weariness and we were soon ready for dinner. We chose the Fandado Restaurant and indulged in a pre-dinner drink in the cocktail lounge followed by a delicious dinner from a menu that made the mouth water. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We were also intrigued by the other restaurant, the ịOSTRAS!, which offers a ‘paleo’ diet menu as part of the healthy living regime for supplementing and supporting the facilities of the health spa. When we tried it later in our stay we were impressed with the delicious range of simple, fresh and healthy menu options available. In the restaurant we met some people who were staying in one of the apartments which are part of the hotel, and they were enthusiastic about how great it was to have all the comforts of home whilst on holiday. It sounded nice, but we were not sorry to be pampered and catered for without a care in the world.

A visit to the Spa and Wellness Centre was a must for me even before venturing out to explore the beaches and the countryside and so the next day I was there for a sauna, massage and facial. This is the stuff of daydreams and fitted my picture of a truly relaxing holiday just perfectly. When we did make it to the beach, it was another treat. The white sands and blue skies are such an energising contrast to the grey we had left behind. We spent happy hours lazing in the sun, catching up on our reading and bathing in the gentle Atlantic swell.

The range of cultural attractions finally drew us away from the beach and a visit to the Huelva Museum was fascinating, giving us a journey through the history of Huelva, from the Neolithic period through to Roman times. There is a collection of Roman mining materials from the famous Rio Tinto. Contemporary art by local artists in the Fine Arts section gave us a feel for the thriving culture of the region.. A visit to the Baroque 17th century La Merced Cathedral was lovely as well. The surrounding countryside and beaches are breathtaking and, inspired by a picture of the legendary dancing horses of Andalucía, we took a horseriding trip by the sea and through some pretty little hidden villages. That was the perfect end to a perfect day-dream come true of a holiday. Next time the grey skies weigh us down too much, we will be sure to be back.

HOW TO GET FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE HOTEL

By car: We recommend renting a car for the entire length of your stay in order to be able to explore the beautiful Andalusian region freely.

- From Faro Airport, the drive takes about an hour: Follow signs to A22/Espanha/Olhão, and merge onto the A22 following directions to Andalucia, España. Follow that road for about an hour, and continue onto A-49 for another 20 minutes. Take exit 117 for N-445 toward Lepe Oeste/HU-4400/Villablanca. Follow signs for N-445/Lepe and merge onto HU-4400. Continue straight onto N-445, then A-5076, and follow signs to La Antilla. Get onto Av. de las Cumbres and follow that road until you reach the hotel which will be on your right.

- From Seville Airport, the drive takes about an hour and a half: From Seville, on the A-66, take exit 17B to merge onto E-1/A-49 toward Camas/Huelva. Follow that road for about 1 hour and 20 minutes, then keep right at the fork to stay on E-1/A-49, following signs for Portugal for another 35 minutes. Take exit 117 for N-445 toward Lepe Oeste/HU-4400/Villablanca. Follow signs for N-445/Lepe and merge onto HU-4400. Continue straight onto N-445, then A-5076, and follow signs to La Antilla. Get onto Av. de las Cumbres and follow that road until you reach the hotel which will be on your right.
