Hotel Roc Blanc Andorra ★★★★

Set in the urbanisation of Escaldes, close to the capital of Andorra la Vella, the modern and contemporary Hotel Roc Blanc & Spa is nothing but grand. Step inside and you may feel as though you’ve just boarded a flash cruise ship. Atrium-like in its appearance, the large hall has an elegant curved staircase and glass lifts with brass trimmings. Open in the middle, the upper floors surround like the ship’s ‘decks’.

Rooms are large and spacious, consisting of a writing desk and comfy seating area. Decked in warm colours of plums and apricots, they are also inviting and provide a sense of homeliness.

Les Escaldes got its name from the presence of many hot springs in the area. Ranging from temperatures between 22°C and 66 °C, the springs have been used since the Roman times and are said to have medicinal properties. The main one is a large hot lake, which covers 650 metres squared and maintains a perfect temperature of 32°C throughout the year. It’s the ideal place to go after a day of hiking or skiing to soothe those aching muscles.

Of course, if you want to benefit from the hot springs in a little more privacy and have the added bonus of a range of treatments too, then the hotel has this covered. The Thermal Spa Roc Blanc draws the qualities from the natural minerals and provides a cool sanctuary to both unwind and rejuvenate. The hypothermal waters here are 70°C and contain both sodium sulphide and sulphur ions, which aid in the alleviation of symptoms of arthritis and respiratory problems. It is also said to combat stress and even aid in the slimming process. Facilities include a swimming pool, hot tub with thermal water, sauna, steam room and cardio area. Guests can also indulge in everything from facials to hydration body treatments, classic massages and decadent body rituals with volcanic or precious stones, Tibetan pindas or shells.

Andorra is said to have over 2,000 shops – that’s more than one for every 40 inhabitants, so of course some time must be spent browsing the best in nearby Andorra la Vella. Make sure you drag yourself away from the bargains to look around the historic capital too. The best area for exploring is Barri Antic, the old part of Andorra la Vella with its narrow cobbled streets flanked by stone houses and sweet pine trees. There are also a couple of pretty churches – the Església de Santa Coloma and Església de Sant Esteve, the striking stone Casa de Vall, an emblem of the city, and the impressive Plaça del Poble with its large government building and romantic views across the Pyrenees.

Return to the hotel to dine at L’Entrecote restaurant, which offers both traditional and innovative dishes in a warm and stylish atmosphere. The menu has a big emphasis on locally sourced ingredients, and as well as a la carte options, there are fresh seasonal recipes too. Think plates such as Pyrenees ox served with a vibrant sauce, plenty of game, as well as lamb, rabbit and poultry.
