By Melanie Webb, VeryChic correspondent
Someone once described Alsace to me as a delicious fine wine that blends the best of France and the best of Germany. After visiting the centre of this beautiful region, Strasbourg, I can only fervently agree. A step into Strasbourg is like stepping into an old time fairytale with its timber beamed houses in sweet, candy colours, winding narrow lanes and the fairy tale river through Petite France. It will feel even more so when you enter a cosy tavern or take a bite of their gingerbread or pain d’épice (no, it doesn’t have to be Christmas to indulge in such delights). Yet alongside this and Strasbourg’s immense Gothic cathedral, we find the modern buildings of the EU and university and it is in this contrast we find the delightful, boutique design Hotel D.

  • A walk around the Parc de L’Orangerie in good weather, it has a little menagerie and a thriving population of storks which in spring are surrounded by babies, it’s a beautiful sight.
    Avenue de l'Europe, 67000 Strasbourg.
  • Alsace is a beautiful area of France, don’t miss out on booking a tour along the Alsace Wine Road to appreciate the vineyards and beautiful towns in the region, especially Colmar.
  • Trying some Flammekeuche or tartes flambées, a traditional dish from the region at this rustic resturant. They are like pizza, but made with different ingredients and not necessarily all with cheese and tomato. There are also sweet tartes flambées for dessert. Choose a few and share them between you!

Strasbourg

France

Hotel D **** is located in the city centre of Strasbourg, the economic and cultural capital of the western French region of Alsace. The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the Place de la Republique and a 10 minute walk from the Strasbourg Cathedral.

BY PLANE

  • Strasbourg Airport (SXB) sits around 10 km / 6.2 mi west-southwest of Strasbourg and around 19 km / 11 mi (20 minutes') drive from the hotel. The airport receives regular flights from elsewhere in France, as well a number of regular or seasonal international flights, including from a handful of major cities across Europe.

Alternatively, Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (MLH, BSL, EAP) near the German and Swiss border is about 1 hour and 40 minutes drive to the south, or Stuttgart Airport (STR) is about 1 hour and 40 minutes drive across the German border to the east.

From the airports to the hotel:
    • From Strasbourg International Airport: walk 6 minutes to Entzheim-Aéroport and take the TER (SNCF) train into Strasbourg and change to get to Basel.
    • From Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg: take the BVB bus n.50 runs to Basel's central railway station, taking around 20/25 minutes, or take a taxi, taking around 15-20 minutes.

BY TRAIN

  • Gare de Strasbourg-Ville is the main railway station in Strasbourg and it is served by France's high-speed TGV train services. It is therefore possible to reach Strasbourg by train rapidly from Paris and a number of neighbouring countries, including the UK.
