The Cranley Hotel ★★★★

Elegant living in a quintessential London townhouse.

By Siena Morrell, VeryChic correspondent
I might have lived in some of Europe’s most beautiful cities but London, my childhood home, is certainly where my heart remains. As Samuel Johnson once said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” Though some doubts may now exist over ‘affordability’, London today offers even richer cultural, culinary and commercial variety than in Johnson’s 18th-century capital, and Cranley Hotel in leafy South Kensington is perfectly located for a weekend in the city.

Chic idea: to make the most of your time in London, book your tickets in advance for a wide range of activities, here.

  • My favourite weekend haunt as a kid was Portobello Road market. Heaving with teenagers and tourists alike, this place is an antiques gold mine. You can’t miss Stumper & Fielding, where I have bought my favourite hats for years, and where you can find the best treats for boys of all ages. Tel. 0207 2295 5577, 107 Portobello Road.

  • I’ve finally grown out of my late-night McDonald’s phase and have replaced it with something significantly more sophisticated. Head to the Admiral Codrington for a great gourmet burger; my favourite is the shredded duck with foie gras... Tel. 020 7581 0005, 17 Mossop Street.

  • The National Gallery and its accompanying restaurant are certainly worth a visit, but a little closer to home and infinitely more stylish is the Saatchi Gallery, on the bustling King’s Road. Contemporary art and sculptural installations from largely undiscovered artists take precedence in some of Chelsea’s finest real estate in the beautiful Duke of York Square. Duke Of York's HQ, King's Road.

  • Granger & Co doesn’t take reservations at its Notting Hill restaurant, but you can wait for a table while perusing boutiques in leafy and stylish Westbourne Grove. Enjoy specialties such as ricotta hotcakes with banana and honeycomb butter, or more traditional eggs and sourdough soldiers in a gorgeous restaurant setting. Tel. 020 7229 9111. 175 Westbourne Grove.
