Just along the coast from vibrant Barcelona and a few kilometres from Tarragona, sits the charming town of Altafulla. Here, I stepped back in time against a backdrop of Roman ramparts, characterful castles, and sprawling verdant scenery. Catalonia is a beautiful part of Spain, full of serene natural beauty, rich culture, and delicious local flavours. Hotel Gran Claustre****, an 18th Century renovated convent, is just waiting to be your address in this enchanting town. Boasting Moorish charm, contemporary yet vintage design, relaxing spa facilities, and a sumptuous restaurant, it doesn’t get any better!
Just down the coast from bustling Barcelona lies Altafulla, a town overflowing with Catalonian charm and Roman ramparts. Boasting historic culture woven through its impressive castles and views of the Mediterranean Sea, it is located a few kilometres from Tarragona. Altafulla being an area of National Cultural Interest, I was eager to explore.
The Hotel Gran Claustre**** radiates old Moorish magic, found in a renovated former convent. Its 18th Century architecture is otherworldly, epitomising quaint Catalonia. Inside, I stepped back in time in the central courtyard, with ornate balconies perched overhead like the set of an old romantic play. The combination of earthy tones, archaic architecture, and contemporary interior design provided the perfect juxtaposition of old and new - an ideal backdrop for a serene trip amongst Catalonia’s cultural beauty.
To complete the Spanish fairytale, my Superior Room flaunted breath-taking views of rolling verdant hills and archaic architecture, and was comprised a soft colour palette with contemporary amenities. Tranquil tones set a peaceful mood, whilst bursts of vibrant reds and oranges added a quirky touch. With thirty-nine boutique rooms all individually decorated, there’s a different story to be explored behind every door.
Despite being tucked away in a quaint, Roman town, the Gran Claustre**** is surrounded by a wealth of activities. Throughout the unique Catalonian countryside, you can hike, cycle, go diving, and sample local flavours at the many vineyards. Being so close to the Mediterranean Sea, there is also a plethora of water-sports and boat trips, as well as cute coves that scatter the pristine coastline. Meanwhile, on-site you can unwind in the luxurious spa and sample Mediterranean cuisine accompanied by a glass of local wine in the Bruixes Buriac restaurant, encircled by sprawling vistas.
Who knew such cultural luxury could be found outside of Barcelona?
