All roads lead to Bidart (or “Bide Artean” in Basque, which means “in the midst of the paths at the crossroads”). It is a picturesque village set between land and sea at the crossroads of Bayonne, Biarritz, and St. Jean de Luz. Here, the rhythm of the Atlantic waves are overlooked by the Pyrenees to form a wild and wonderful landscape. Located just 20km from the Spanish border, this seaside resort has maintained its charm, authenticity, and its Basque identity.
These words can also describe the Domaine de Bassilour. Set in a nineteenth century manor house on a former farm, it boasts several hectares of glorious scenery. It has been skilfully renovated by the owners who have retained and promoted its yesteryear charm: old stone, exposed beams, and country style furniture propel visitors back in time whilst the warm, family atmosphere immediately puts me at ease. I know straight away that this is the perfect place to recharge amongst nature and traditional Basque culture.
The unique rooms are a delight to set eyes on. Historic nuances rub shoulders with contemporary luxury, where pre-loved furniture has been rehomed from flea markets and standing bathtubs invoke a sense of nostalgia. But it is not just this mishmash of old world vibes and new-age design that makes the Domaine de Bassilour so unique. In 2008 it was named an eco-friendly hotel thanks to its numerous ecological renovation projects; from the triple-glazed windows and geothermal energy, to the hemp insulated roof, every material has been thoughtfully selected to respect the environment. This ode to nature and ecological living is presented in the breakfasts too, where homemade, organic products are the order of the day. I filled myself up with fresh jams and breads whilst soaking up the country glamour of the spacious lounge, decorated with stone columns and a large, welcoming fireplace.
After a breakfast fit for a king, I was more than ready to venture out and discover everything the Basque region had to offer – and let me tell you, it has a lot to offer! Golf enthusiasts will feel right at home amongst the seven golf courses that sit within a 20km radius of the hotel, whilst outdoorsy travellers can revel in the range of activities. Mountain biking, hiking, surfing, and horseback riding are all unique and adventurous ways to get to know the area, whilst the intricate display of Basque craftsmanship is perfect for culture lovers and the less adventurous. Think delicious cheese workshops and farms, and vineyards bursting with fruity flavours and incredible views.
As the sun sets against the soaring green backdrop, you’ll want to tuck in to some pintxos (Basque tapas) and a glass of sangria, tasting the fine flavours of the region. Bidart really is at the crossroads of the Basque’s most beautiful towns, both geographically and culturally. The Domaine de Bassilour offers both a taste of the past, with its vintage décor and nineteenth century charm, as well as a trip through Basque contemporary culture and traditions – the perfect combination for a relaxing break.
