By Siena Morell, VeryChic correspondent
In control of the most important country in Europe, being a medieval king in France was a serious business, and, like most jobs in politics, it had its disadvantages. But, one of the luxurious privileges of being royalty was the freedom to choose where to establish a summer residence. The most popular choice was the Loire Valley, the ‘Garden of France’. And with good reason: with its spectacular natural beauty, and easily accessible from the capital, the Loire quickly became the destination for kings, nobility, and ambitious wealthy gentlemen. Nowadays, it boasts over one thousand stunning chateaux, with the oldest dating from the Middle Ages. Our choice of hotel to explore the sublime area was the Chateau de Marçay ****, a charming, traditional chateau overlooking villages and vineyards.

  • Obviously, the neighbouring chateaux are all stunning, but our recommendation is the immaculate Chateau de Villandry, with over 20,000 square metres of cultivated gardens.

  • If you're prepared to make the drive, the most spectacular and recognisable of the Loire chateaux are the Chateau Royal de Blois and the Domaine National de Chambord. Blois is an architectural museum, but also hosts a variety of historical artefacts and art exhibitions. Chambord is also characteristic of French Renaissance architecture, and houses rich collections including seventeenth-century tapestries and numerous works of art.
  • Make a visit to the nearby town of Chinon, and its ancient fortress, for a change of scenery after discovering the magnificent Loire chateaux. Many events throughout the season turn a traditional visit into an extraordinary one. The view from the fortress over Chinon is also worth the trip.

  • Dine out at the critically acclaimed "Les Annees 30" gourmet restaurant, bask in the wonderful atmosphere with charming photos of the old town of Chinon and indulge in the creative dishes.
