The Mirror Barcelona ★★★★

Futuristic luxury with traditional standards of service.

By Siena Morrell, VeryChic correspondent
Barcelona’s moment in the spotlight still isn’t over: it has always been on the vanguard of contemporary style and design since Antoni Gaudí’s instantly recognisable contributions to the city skyline. It might not be as familiar as the Sagrada Família or the Casa Batlló, but The Mirror Barcelona is impressing visitors to the city with its innovative design and use of sophisticated technology without sacrificing a personal, professional service. In the heart of Eixample (pronounced ‘ey-shamp-luh’, so you can impress your travel partner) a less-touristy, more up-market area of the city centre, The Mirror offers guests a contemporary and intimate spot to rest your feet after pounding the pavements: that is, if you ever want to leave your room.

The Mirror **** is well placed in the Eixample district of Barcelona’s city centre, only a few minutes’ walk from the popular shopping streets of Avinguda Diagonal, Rambla Catalunya and the prestigious Paseo de Gracia.

BY PLANE

  • Barcelona is served mainly by Barcelona-El Prat Airport, just 15km from the city centre. Flights are listed below:

From the UK: British Airways, Iberia and low cost Monarch, Vueling and EasyJet all operate direct flights out of London. EasyJet also fly direct from Bristol and Belfast while Ryanair fly direct from Birmingham, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

From Ireland: Flying from Dublin, you can find direct flights operated by Aer Lingus and Ryanair, while Ryanair also fly direct from Cork.

From Germany: Carriers flying direct out of Berlin include: Air Berlin, Iberia, Vueling, EasyJet and Germanwings. Lufthansa and Brussels Airlines also fly direct out of Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich. Vueling Airlines also fly out of Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich.

From the Netherlands: KLM, Iberia, Vueling and Transavia all provide direct flights from Amsterdam to Barcelona while Transavia also fly direct out of Rotterdam and Eindhoven.

From Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland: SAS, Norwegian and Vueling fly direct from Stockholm in Sweden, Oslo in Norway and Copenhagen, Denmark. Ryanair also fly out of Stockholm and Oslo. Finnair, Iberia, Vueling and Norwegian fly direct from Helsinki, Finland.

From France: Air France, Iberia, Vueling and EasyJet all fly direct from Paris. Vueling airlines further provide direct flights from Lyon, Toulouse, Marseille and Nice. EasyJet also fly direct from Lyon and Nice.

Low-cost airlines, mainly Ryanair, also fly to Girona–Costa Brava Airport, 12km south of Girona and around 100km north of Barcelona. It is however much quicker, easier and cheaper to get to Barcelona from El-Prat Airport than Girona, which is worth considering when choosing flights.

GETTING FROM THE AIRPORTS TO THE HOTEL

  • From Barcelona-El Prat airport:
    - By taxi: Taxis are located outside all the main terminal exits and usually take 20 to 30 minutes to get to the city centre, costing around €25 from T2 and €30 from T1 (with surcharges for luggage). Be sure to take an official, black and yellow Barcelona taxi.

    - By train: A cheap and fast way of getting to and from the airport. Trains run every 30 minutes or so to Barcelona, taking around 25 minutes. A single airport ticket costs around €4. A far more cost-efficient ticket, especially if you plan on using public transport during your stay, is the T10 – costing €10.40. It is valid for 10 journeys (no expiry date), on buses, trams and trains (and includes the airport zone). It can also be shared by multiple people.
When taking the train, you may choose to get off at Sants and then take the metro line 5 (blue) to Diagonal which is a few minutes’ walk to the hotel. Otherwise, stay on the train until Passeig de Gracia, from which it is a 15 minute walk.

    - By bus: The Aerobus run express buses between the airport and city centre. Tickets are €5.90 for a single and €10.20 return. Get off at Plaça de Catalunya, from which it is a 20 minute walk straight up Rambla de Catalunya and then left onto Carrer de Corsega, or take the metro line L3 (green) to Diagonal.
At night the NitBus N17 runs from Terminal 1 and the N16 from Terminal 2. A single ticket is €2.15 (Although you may also use the T10). They also stop around Plaça de Catalunya.

    From Girona–Costa Brava airport:
    - By bus: The most convenient route is the Barcelona Bus (which coincides with Ryanair flight arrivals), run by Sagalés. They operate buses that coincide with Ryanair flight times, to Barcelona’s city centre. A return ticket costs €25 and can be purchased from the Sagalés booth at the airport.
The bus terminates at Barcelona Nord bus station, the closest metro from there is Arc de Triomf (served by line 1, red); it is then only one stop to Urquinaona, a 10 minute walk from the hotel.

    - By train: First take a bus (part of the Sagalés service) to Girona city centre, buses leave at 30 minutes past each hour and take 25 minutes. A single ticket is around €2 and a return around €4. From there you can take a train to Paseo de Gracia.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

  • The closest metro stop is Diagonal served by the L3 (green) line and the L5 (blue) line. Depending on where you exit the station, either walk up Paseo de Gracia turning left onto Av. Diagonal and then left again onto Carrer de Corsega, or walk up Rambla de Catalunya and turn left onto Carrer de Corsega.

Also nearby is Paseo de Gracia metro and train station, served metro L2 (purple), L3 (green) & L4 (yellow) lines and several trains. From here walk all the way up Paseo de Gracia (towards Diagonal) eventually taking a left onto Av. Diagonal, then take the first left onto Carrer de Corsega.
